| Environmental Engineering:
Environmental engineers are the technical professionals who identify and design solutions for environmental problems. Environmental engineers provide safe drinking water, treat and dispose of wastes, maintain air quality, control water pollution, and remediate sites contaminated due to spills or improper disposal of hazardous substances. They monitor the quality of the air, water, and land. And, they develop new and improved means to protect the environment.
Environmental Engineering related education at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth consists of one core course (with a laboratory componant) and several senior-level elective courses and topics for senior-level capstone design project. The core course is an introduction to the field of Environmental Engineering. In it, we outline the development of this field from a focus on wastewater treatment and drinking water treatment- which was labeled 'sanitary engineering' - to addressing issues of contemporary society which requires a more comprehensive understanding of the interdependence of environmental media, which is solid, liquid, or gas.
Environmental Chemistry Option:
The Environmental Chemistry Option is designed for students who are interested in the interface of chemistry and science of the environment. Students completing the Environmental
Chemistry Option are well prepared for a variety of post baccalaureate careers. Typical career objectives might include those that entail environmental monitoring and analysis, regulatory monitoring and enforcement, industrial compliance and others.
In addition, a student who selects the Environmental Chemistry Option is well prepared for graduate studies in chemistry, environmental science, marine science, environmental chemistry and other areas. The variety of environment-related course electives
allows students to select a program of study that fits their interests, while the required chemistry courses ensure that they develop expertise within the fundamental areas of chemistry.
STrategic Envirotechnology Partnership (STEP) Program:
Established in 1994, the STEP program is a partnership between the University of Massachusetts and the Executive Office of Environmental Affairs. The program was established to assist business with the development and promotion of innovative, technology-based solutions to environmental problems in the Commonwealth. The ATMC is responsible for managing the STEP activities at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth. Through the past ten years, the program has evolved into an internally funded research program to support and encourage faculty members to engage in environmental related research.
Industry Outreach Program (IOP):
The Environmental Chemistry Laboratory at the ATMC is established to provide the needed resources to link the University's mission with industry's technology needs. Through the collaboration, the industry partners will have research done to develop new technologies for their market or to solve their technical problems, to build prototypes for field demonstration or commercial exhibition, and to evaluate and validate their new products and processes.
