MicroMagnetics opened its offices at the University of Massachusetts Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Center in April 2002. The company is developing advanced sensor products by employing proprietary technology licensed from Brown University. MicroMagnetics is working to solve a variety of sensing challenges by using the technology developed for high density computer hard drives. Its first product is a scanning magnetic microscope that is capable of seeing the flow of electricity inside an Integrated Circuit (IC) computer chip. Using new magnetic materials employing phenomena such as Giant Magneto Resistivity (GMR) and Magnetic Tunneling Junctions (MTJ), the microscope can see features as small as one hundred nanometers, one hundred billionths of a meter.

Develops and commercializes novel sensors and imaging systems for charged particle and single photon detection. The products are based on technologies developed by the company President for the Hubble Space Telescope and other space missions. Nightsen’s initial focus is on validating their proprietary process for the commercial fabrication of high quality curved-channel microchannel plates (MCPs). Curved-channel MCPs have a very wide range of applications in many disciplines, but to date no fabrication process has proved viable. Applications include materials analysis, night vision, ultraviolet, x-ray, and medical diagnostic imaging, high-energy physics, space-based surveillance, and space science. Following the commercialization of the curved-channel MCPs. Nightsen will develop high value-added sensors and imaging systems utilizing these devices and their proprietary technology.
